Dorthea McCray

February 28, 1944 ~ November 27, 2021 (age 77)


Dorothea Mae McCray (Cashaw), surrounded by her family, peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord on November 27, 2021, at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Born on February 28, 1944, to the late Joseph Clinton Cashaw, Sr. and Freddie Mae Cashaw (King), she was preceded in death by her parents; siblings: Joanne Williams, Frederick James Cashaw, LaVerta Jane Whorten, and Philip Craig Cashaw.


Dorothea is survived by her husband Calvin T. McCray, Sr.; sons Calvin T. McCray, Jr., and Alvin O. McCray (Jason); grandchildren: Randi McCray, Jordan McCray, Roman Rudman-McCray, and Edyn Rudman-McCray. Her siblings: Joseph C. Cashaw, Jr., Alan G. Cashaw (Francine), Oscar Z. Cashaw (Annette), Felicia M. Allen (Arthur), Rev. Arlene Williams (Charles) and Rita Jean Collins; her aunt Arjustice Darby; uncles Charles King, Thomas King and John E. King; and a host of godchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.


She is a graduate of Johnstown High School and Conemaugh Valley Hospital School of Nursing and attended the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. She worked for Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon; Deborah Hospital in Browns Mills, NJ; Conemaugh Hospital; Bethlehem Steel Dispensary; and American Red Cross.


Dorothea was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.  She later served as First Lady of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church where she remained a devoted member—deaconess, usher, and Director of Christian Education from 1999 – 2010.  

A founding member of the Piano Gospelettes, she loved singing, playing piano, and public speaking.  She was a true servant of God. 

Family and friends will be received from 5- 8 PM on Friday December 3rd, 2021 and 10-11 AM on Saturday December 4th, 2021 at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, 531 2nd St Johnstown, Pa 15909. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 4th at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church with internment at Forest Lawn Cemetery immediately following. Professional services handled by Moskal-Reid Funeral Home, (West End).
