Rev. Andrew William Tilly Emeritus was called home to rest in the arms of Our Lord and Savior Monday July 13, 2020. He was born July 30, 1926 in Plaquimine, La. Preceded in death by his parents Rev. Andrew Thomas Tilly and Ada (Gibson) Tilly, wife of 45 years Margaret C. (Ruffin) Tilly, and son Jonathan Victor Tilly. Brothers Bernie and Donald and Sister Alice Tilly. Survived by Granddaughter Jacqueline (Jackie) Tilly and mother Diane Tilly, and Sister Dr. Lois Ameila Tilly and Brothers Rev. Joseph Albert, Jessie Lee, Henry Bernard, Roosevelt and Anthony Tilly, also survived by these aunts Lois Edwards and Mary Davis, and two brother-in-law’s. And one sister-in-law. He leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, and Church Family Members of Pleasant Hill Church and the Johnstown Community. Rev. Tilly attended the local Elementary and High School in Plaquimine. He then attended Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana. After completing Pre-Med at Xavier University, he went to the University of New Mexico, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to do graduate work in Science. Before completing his studies at the University of New Mexico, He went into the Army. After his Basic Medical training, he attended the Army School of Medical Technology at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. He then went to Benedict College, (A Baptist School), and was ordained a Baptist Minister. Rev. Tilly served as his father’s assistant Pastor and worked at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. It was there that he met and marries Mrs. Margaret (Ruffin) Tilly. They had one son, Jonathan Victor Tilly. Later moved to Philadelphia where he served as associated Minister of the Vine Memorial Baptist Church and Supervisor of the Medical Arts Laboratory until he was called as Pastor of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church on October 2, 1965. Rev. Tilly is a Former Secretary of his Masonic Lodge of Chicago Nuclear Medical Society; Member of American Medical Technologists; Member of American Biological Social. At Present: Member of Philadelphia and Vicinity Minister Conference; Member of Johnstown Ministerium; member of the council of Churches of Christ in Greater Johnstown (Board Member of Missions); Treasurer of Cambria General Baptist Association; Member of the Allegheny Baptist Association; Member of Pennsylvania Baptist Convention; member of the National Baptist Convention U.S.A.; Inc. and Former Pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church of Johnstown, Pa. As Pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church he was instrumental in re-organizing the BYF with the assistance of the First lady Margaret Tilly and Rev. Samuel Hart Sr. for 10 consecutive years the Pleasant Hill Youth has won awards at the Allegheny Union Assoc. Roundup for having the highest attendance. Also, started the Martin Luther King Program which awards were presented to some of our community leaders and church members for their work. As a faculty member he headed the program Project J to enable students to attend the UPJ. There is also a Scholarship in his name at the University Of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Campus. He mentored and ordained many ministers, pastors and deacons. The proudest achievement he had was countlessly Saving Souls in Jesus Name. Well Done May Good and Faithful Servant. A World War II Veteran. A processional will start from Moskal-Reid Funeral Home on J Street at 10.30a.m. Saturday August 1, 2020. A funeral Service will be at graveside starting at 11a.m. at Benshoff Hill Cemetery, Rev. Clyde Williams Officiating, and The Ritual Team will do military honors.
