William E. Ryan

RYAN - William E. “Bill”, Jr, 80, Erie PA, formerly of Johnstown, died December 22, 2020 at UPMC Hamot Medical Center.  Bill was born July 10, 1940 in Johnstown, son of the late William E. Ryan, Sr. and Bessie P. (Williams) Ryan.  He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Margaret “Peg” A. Ryan.  Bill is survived by his daughters, Kelly Weingard, husband Rusty and granddaughter Lillen of Spartansburg; and Erin Ryan and husband Patrick Carey of Redondo Beach, CA.  He is also survived by his sister, Mary Ann Lewark and husband, John of State College; nephew John Lewark and niece Jennifer Lulis; and many special relatives and friends.  Bill was a 1958 graduate of Greater Johnstown High School and served in the US Army where he was a Radio Teletype Operator.  He was a former employee of Goodyear, Bearings Inc and Applied Industrial Technologies, from where he retired in 2002.  Bill was an avid member of Christ the Saviour Cathedral where he had served as a Curator and Financial Secretary.  He was a former member of the ACRY Chapter 20 and had attended numerous National ACRY conventions and bowling tournaments and also served as a National ACRY officer.  He was a past member of the church choir and the church basketball team.  Bill also served as a cook at the Christ the Saviour Educational Center.  He was an instrumental figure in assisting with the Amateur Sports Capital and memorabilia in Johnstown.  Known as "Mr. Bill," he was also a dedicated high school band parent.  Bill enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, watching Notre Dame football (even though his daughter Erin went to USC), traveling, running, golfing, bowling, and cooking.  He was affectionately known as “Didi” to his granddaughter Lillen, who he loved dearly in his later years.  Bill has now joined his wife Peg as they cruise Disney World in the sky.  Due to the raging COVID pandemic, the service at Christ the Saviour Cathedral and burial at Benshoff Hill Cemetery are being held privately for the immediate family.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bill’s memory to Christ the Savior Cathedral Eternal Memory Fund, 249 Butler Ave, Johnstown PA 15906.
